Tunisia adopts blockchain system to curb academic fraud

Tunisia has rolled out a blockchain-based diploma verification system after a pilot phase, integrating it into student management platforms at three universities as part of a push to curb academic fraud.

The move follows a 2023 corruption investigation that found tens of thousands of civil servants may have been hired using fraudulent diplomas between 2011 and 2021.

Officials see the system, part of a wider digital modernisation drive by the higher education ministry, as a way to speed up cross-border recognition of Tunisian qualifications and rebuild trust in the credentials universities issue.
